Kingwin EL-35EU-SBL Elite USB 2.0 and eSATA Drive Enclosure
July 23, 2008

Conclusion:

Kingwin's EL-35EU-SBL Elite USB 2.0 and eSATA drive enclosure is a sharp looking product that could simply use some better software. Using the older back up software found on the Kingwin website instead of the software included with the enclosure resulted in satisfactory back ups, but both versions only offer a rudimentary selection of options.

I was pleased to see that there was no loss in drive performance when using the enclosure and e-SATA. I liked the solid aluminum body and ease of drive installation, but it is a shame that Kingwin chose to use chrome plated plastic end caps on such a solidly constructed body.

If you want an e-SATA drive enclosure and only need basic back up capabilities, already have back up software, or don't intend to use the back up capabilities, I could recommend this enclosure. If are looking for a back up system that offers configuration flexibility, this may not be a good choice for you.

A quick search of the Internet shows that this enclosure is available from several retailers for around $35. While this price is comparable with other similar units, the lack of properly functioning back up software takes away from the value.

Pros:

» Sturdy aluminum enclosure body.
» Easy drive installation with slide out tray.
» Performance with the e-SATA connection is equal to that of a direct SATA connection.
» Sharp looking design with eye catching blue LED logo on the front.

Cons:

» Plastic end caps
» No label or keying for LED connection.
» Shipped with flawed back up software.

Special thanks to Kingwin for providing the Kingwin EL-35EU-SBL Elite USB 2.0 and eSATA Drive Enclosure to Bigbruin.com for review!
