Kingston HyperX 2GB PC2-9200 DDR2 Memory Kit
May 02, 2008

Conclusion:

The Kingston HyperX 2GB PC2-9200 DDR2 memory kit lived up to the expectations I had for it after reviewing Kingston's 1GB PC2-9600 kit. The test results were impressive, the overclock was even higher in terms of total MHz, and the every day use was even more enjoyable thanks to the higher capacity.

Getting up to the stock speed of 1150MHz was tricky only because it is an odd speed that I couldn't quite dial in with the settings found in the test system's BIOS. But getting into that general range required minimal effort, and even overclocking to well above 1200MHz was pretty much plug and play. Testing took these modules all the way to 1240MHz without requiring adjustments to the stock timings or voltage.

There are no performance related cons to list for this kit, and perhaps the only thing to keep in mind is related to aesthetics. The review sample was dressed in Kingston's old school heatspreader, but anyone who buys their own kit now would receive modules that looked more like those shown in the promotional image above. Performance doesn't change, but the look is definitely more modern.

A search of PriceGrabber turns up 10 online retailers with the Kingston HyperX 2GB PC2-9200 DDR2 memory kit (KHX9200D2K2/2G) in stock. The lowest price is just over $100 (US), and they can also be purchased directly from Kingston for $113. Some lower speed 2GB DDR2 kits can be had for next to nothing these days, so more than $100 may seem like quite a premium price. Searching PriceGrabber for other PC2-9200 DDR2 memory shows that the choices are rather slim, and that other than Dell offering an OCZ kit for much less than anybody else, the prices are all about the same. It also shows that you can get the 1GB modules from this kit separately, and buying a pair directly from Kingston actually saves you a dollar!

Given the performance and easy overclocking, the Kingston HyperX 2GB PC2-9200 DDR2 memory kit earns the awards of "Gaming Approved" and "Recommended".

Gaming Approved Recommended

Pros:

» Plug and play high speed and low latency
» Overclocked well beyond rated speed while maintaining stock voltage and timings
