Hiyatek CF-6160-1 Laptop Cooling Pad
July 08, 2008

The Basics:

The top of the cooler, as shown in the below left image, is constructed of aluminum. Two stylish grills are cut into this surface to allow air to flow from the 60mm fans inside. The below right image shows the plastic tray fully extended in order to accept a laptop for use. The tray slides freely, but with a laptop computer in place it should stay put thanks to rubber feet on the bottom. A slight lip at the front edge of the tray could be enough to grab the front of the laptop to hold it in place, as well.

The 3-port USB 2.0 hub is found on the right side of the cooler, as shown in the below left image. This type of feature has become my favorite addition to laptop coolers, as it provides a convenient place to attach external storage, input devices, or whatever else you might need. Many times I use a laptop cooler more like a docking station, and prefer to leave a mouse and backup hard drive attached to the cooler, meaning I only have one USB connection to make to the computer when I get setup at my desk. All of the other connections are found on the left side of the cooler, as shown in the below right image. Here we find a mini-USB connection, a connection for an external 5V power supply (optional, not included), a power switch for the cooling fans, a (blue) LED power indicator, and a fan speed control dial. Hiyatek let's you take full control over the fans onboard, from full speed to totally off.

Ventilation slots can be found on the back edge of the cooler, where the two fans can draw in cool air. Just in front of these are two thumbscrews which can be adjusted to change the elevation of the back of the laptop. This allows you to change the angle the computer sits at, so you can find the most comfortable position for your tastes.

The bottom of the cooler is shown in the below left image. We see the plastic tray has slots to keep it from blinding off the fans when retracted, and that the main body of the cooler has a perforated metal bottom. A compartment near the rear edge of the cooler is where we find the one and only accessory, a USB power/data cable. One end of the cable features a mini-USB plug to connect to the cooler, while the other end features two full size USB connectors to connect to the laptop. I found that the device worked just fine with only one connection made to the laptop, but for those who need more power, connecting both is a good idea.

The Hiyatek HY-CF-6160-1 is extremely lightweight, and becomes quite compact when the plastic tray is retracted. Those two features make it appealing for use on the go, while the integrated USB hub could be of interest to mobile or stationary users.
