The Basics:
The image below shows the two 2GB memory modules provided with this kit. While the heatspreaders have an attractive design, when not powered up the Ballistix Tracer units do a good job concealing the fact that they are rather out of the ordinary.
The PCBs are black, and except for a band of silver around the edges, the heatspreaders are black, too. Both sides feature the "Crucial" and the "Ballistix Tracer DDR3" logos, while a different white label is found on either side. One features a set of numbers and two bar codes, while the other provides the all important details on speed, timings, and voltage.
The images below provide an edge view of the modules, where two things are supposed to be more visible. The first is that the heatspreaders are held on by adhesive that makes good, uniform contact with all of the memory chips. The second is that there are tiny LEDs positioned all around the top and bottom edges of each module. The little yellow rectangles seen along the top edge shown in the images below are the LEDs. And while they may all appear yellow when turned off, we will see that the color capabilities go beyond monochrome.
Installation:
The physical installation of the memory was simple, as these are the size and shape of traditional modules. No need to worry about interference caused by oversized heatspreaders here. We have already seen what the modules look like uninstalled and without the LEDS powered on, and here are two shots of them in action. LEDs along the bottom edge of the heatspreaders provide a constant blue light that washes over the motherboard and nearby components. Multi-colored LEDs along the top edge of the heatspreaders put on a dynamic light show that coincides with memory activity. If you like the inside of your case to be all lit up like a Christmas tree, this kit is calling your name!
