Packaging:
The Chieftec HM-01B HTPC case arrived in the slick black retail box shown below. While you do get a few images of the product and a handful of marketing phrases, there isn't much in the way of technical information to be found.
Inside the box, the case is very well protected thanks to foam blocks cut to hold it securely in place. This plus a plastic bag sealing out moisture made sure that the case was delivered in perfect condition.
External Examination:
One thing is obvious with this case; the color black is definitely the dominant theme. Sometimes monochrome can be boring, but other times it can look really good. I would say this case falls into the second category.
The below left image provides an overview of the HM-01B provided for review. The aluminum housing, optical drive bay cover, volume and navigation knobs, and even the VFD screen are all black. Otherwise, the color silver is used sparingly for a few small labels and the Chieftec logo on the left side.
The above right image takes a closer look at the left side of the case's front panel. Here we find the volume knob, the panel for the two line vacuum fluorescent display, the "Navigator" navigation knob, a power button, a hard drive activity LED, and a reset button.
