Sapphire Atomic Radeon HD4870 X2 2048MB Graphics Card
December 18, 2008

The Basics:

The three main components of the Atomic Radeon HD4870 X2 are packed into separate foam compartments in the case, and you have to lift them out with care since they are all connected to each other. The below left image shows the card (still in its anti-static bag) on the left, the CPU water block in the middle, and the cooling fan and radiator on the right.

The above right image shows that the card's anti-static bag features Sapphire's typical warning that you must be sure to connect the card to your power supply before use.

Handling the assembly is a bit tricky since everything is connected; with three components and just two hands you have to be careful and creative. Laying everything flat for pictures is easy enough, but moving this into a system may not be so simple.

The below left image shows the front side of the card. The black cooler and black PCB look sharp, and the unit seems rather compact for a dual GPU solution. It occupies just a single slot thanks to the liquid cooling, and the PCB isn't as long as I expected it to be, although it does look alot like many other brands of HD4870 X2 cards already on the market. The liquid cooling connections come off of the top edge of the card, with rigid fittings giving way to flexible tubing about an inch out.

The back side of the card is shown in the above right image. Here we see that "X" shaped braces are used behind each GPU, and a black metal shroud covers most of the PCB.
