Argosy HV675 MediaPlay HDMI Media Player
March 31, 2009

Conclusion:

Geeks.com sells the Argosy HV675 MediaPlay HDMI media player for $64.99, which I can see as good and bad. It is much cheaper than an HTPC or some other stand alone media players, but then it does not do as much as an HTPC and it may be lacking the features of some media players. The Western Digital WD TV HD is a very similar product, but it offers true 1080p high definition for just under $100 (US). If the Argosy was a bit cheaper it might be more appealing, especially to those with a collection of non-HD media files to enjoy.

After realizing that a little patience is required when booting up with your media files connected via USB, the device worked just fine. The only negatives would then be wish list items that could make the device more desirable. Actually having a network connection where that RJ-45 punchout was found would make sharing media far more convenient than adding a USB drive. HD playback capabilities would be nice, and including an HDMI cable would be much appreciated.

The HV675 scores points because it takes up little space, and should fit in to just about any setup. The design is rather simple but sophisticated, with no indication up front as to what this little box might be used for. Couple this with the fact that all of the connections are hidden out back and that it makes zero noise, you can enjoy your media without being aware of the source (no fan noise, no gaudy lights, etc).

The bottom line is that the device looks good, is easy to use, and provides another way to share your (non-HD) digital media library with your home theater system.

Pros:

» Compact, attractive enclosure
» Intuitive remote control
» Works well
» Play back movies just like you were using a DVD player
» Capable of playing back a variety of files, including DVD folders, DivX/XviD, MPEG1, and MPEG2

Cons:

» May be slow to boot up... be patient
» Does not play WMV or MOV files
» A few wish list items would make it much more appealing:
» Not networkable (although there is an RJ-45 punchout)
» Not capable of true high definition (although it does upscale to 1080i)
» Doesn't include an HDMI cable
