X2gen MG19R8 19
June 04, 2006

Conclusion:

Having never heard of X2gen prior to seeing the 19" MG19R8 on the Geeks.com website, I honestly didn't know what to anticipate. My expectations were perhaps a bit low, and the performance, price, and styling of this display easily surpassed all of my preconceived ideas. I'm not saying I expected nothing and got just a bit more than nothing, but this may honestly be the best TFT LCD monitor I am currently using. On a daily basis I also use a ViewSonic VA1912wb, a ViewSonic VA720, a variety of Dell Ultra Sharps, and a Samsung.

The image quality in 2D and 3D applications is superb, and the performance seems to indicate specifications greater than those indicated for brightness, contrast, and dot pitch. Additionally, the 13ms response time proved to be plenty fast for 3D gaming, and the handful of games I tried all looked great regardless of the pace.

The X2gen MG19R8 is by no means perfect, but the issues I found were generally minor. Of all the "cons" listed below, I was only really impacted by the dust behind the glass and the lack of a DVI connection.

As I mentioned in the introduction to this review, the regular price on the Geeks.com website is $219.00, but I have seen the X2gen MG19R8 on sale a few times for under $200. And as I also mentioned that it must be popular since it is now sold out. Geeks.com does have a huge selection of other LCD monitors in a range of sizes from a large number of different brands. They even includes a few other sizes from X2Gen to consider, if you are sold on the company in general.

In case you want this monitor and Geeks.com never gets them back in stock, PriceGrabber indicates that you should expect to pay just under $200 for one at a few other reputable locations.

Given the excellent image quality, modern features and specifications, and competitive pricing, I award the X2gen MG19R8 19" TFT LCD Display a final score of 4 out of 5 stars, and the distinction of being both "Recommended" and a "Good Value".

Final Rating (4 out of 5 stars):

Pros:

» May be my new favorite LCD display!
» Glass cover on LCD panel seems to make things look smoother
» Seems better than the specs on brightness, contrast, and dot pitch may imply
» Excellent 2D and 3D image quality
» Wide viewing angle
» Fast response time
» Absolutely no defective (dead or lit) pixels
» Competitively priced
» VESA wall mountable

Cons:

» May have glare on glass covered LCD panel
» Dust between glass and LCD panel
» Back lighting visible on dark screens
» Speakers aren't good for much more than minimal use
» Base only pivots in one direction, and there is no height adjustment
» No DVI (VGA only)
» Appeared to be a few rows of unused pixels on left side

Special thanks to Geeks.com for providing the X2gen MG19R8 19" TFT LCD Display to Bigbruin.com for review!
