X2gen MG19R8 19
June 04, 2006

In Use (continued):

The below left image is of the "OSD Menu" tab where you can control the language, position of the OSD, the level of transparency, and how long it stays on after use. The below right image is the "Misc." or miscellaneous screen. Here you can really just reset the monitor to default settings and adjust the base volume that the speakers will start at when in use. The signal source and mode select functions didn't do anything, and lead me to believe this monitor, or at least this OSD configuration, can be used with devices with more features than the X2gen MG19R8.

As I mentioned already, 2D performance was excellent, but 3D performance was equally impressive. In a few fast paced games and a couple of 3D benchmarks, there wasn't a single moment where the monitor limited the action. No ghosting, no tearing, and no other indication that the quality of the components or the 13ms response time would get in your way of serious 3D action.

In general I am speaking about the display looking good at the native resolution of 1280x1024, but other resolutions even looked very good. Trying out 1152x864 and 1024x768 were also impressive, and it was really only 800x600 that was unacceptable to me.

The glass cover on the LCD panel hasn't really bothered me due to glare, but I did find one minor annoyance with it. While I was combing for dead or lit pixels I did find that there were two bits of dust between the glass and the LCD. In general I can't see them, but if I am focused on a screen with a white background they do occasionally jump at me. Not much you can do other than ignore it, or disassemble the whole thing to try to clean behind the glass. I think I'll ignore it!

There are two other issues worth addressing, as they may be of concern to some users...

The first is that the base does not provide for much adjustment. It pivots back and forth to change the viewing angle, but there is no side to side motion, and more importantly there is not height adjustment. I found the setup to be comfortable, and was able to pivot the base to comfortable angle.

The second is that while on really dark screens, perhaps where you wanted to see true black, the backlighting of the LCD was visible. So, if a scene was supposed to be all black, count on a faint glow of bluish grey around the edges, unless you really adjust the brightness and contrast settings (to a point which may impact normal use).
