Thermalright HR-01 Passive CPU Cooler
February 03, 2006

Installation:

Installation is extremely simple and there really is not much to it. Simply apply some thermal paste to your CPU (or to the bottom of the heat sink), align and place the mounting bracket onto the cooler, secure the clips onto the retention bracket, then press down on the locking handle until it is locked down. That's it! No custom mounting, no screws, nothing! This is a tool-less mounting system.

If you look closely, there is a little bit of room between the heatsink and the ram. Even though I installed a fan, there is a good amount of room between the fan and the 7800GT. This will change from motherboard to motherboard, so if you decide to install a fan, make sure you have plenty of room prior to attaching it. Later use of this cooler with some Corsair PRO Series DDR revealed a problem... The DDR is too tall to be used with the HR-01, although it fit just fine when used with a stock AMD cooler, a Zalman Fatal1ty cooler, or an Arctic Cooling Freezer 64.

As previously mentioned, there are two options available to enhance the cooling properties of the HR-01. The first, is attaching a 120mm fan duct to the HR-01. Installation of the fan duct is simple, and can be attached in a matter of minutes. One end is attached to your 120mm exhaust fan, this is done simply by slipping the fan duct over the edge of the fan, then using included screws to make sure it is attached securely. The other end slips around the HR-01, it is attached to the HR-01 with two pieces of silicone that is quite similar to double sided foam tape.

The second option is attaching a 120mm fan. There is currently no bracket to attach a fan to the HR-01, however, you can use some cable ties and attach a fan yourself, as shown on Thermalright's HR-01 FAQ page. Also, if you are able to use the fan duct, you could enhance the cooling capabilities two-fold by using both a 120mm fan, and the fan duct. Doing this would allow you to place the fans into a "push-pull" configuration!
