Testing:
A few synthetic and real world tests were conducted on the 750GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 using a system with the following components:
» Intel Pentium D840 (3.2 GHz Dual-Core) CPU
» 2x 512MB OCZ GX XTC Gold PC25400 DDR2 EL Dual Channel Memory
» 2x BFG GeForce 6600GT OC 128MB Graphics Cards
» 2x Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 80GB SATA 1.5 Gbps Hard Drives (RAID 0)
» 1x Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 500GB SATA 3 Gbps Hard Drive
» Tuniq Tower 120mm CPU Cooler
» Ultra Products 2nd Generation X-Finity 600W Power Supply
» Buslink DVD R/RW Optical Drive
From the list above, you can see that system already has three Seagate drives installed. These will be used for comparison purposes while testing the 7200.10, and should provide a good point of reference. The 500GB 7200.9 is the next biggest drive available, and also offers NCQ and SATA 3 Gbps. The RAID 0 array holds the system's operating system, and will provide a reference between SATA 1.5 Gbps RAID 0 speeds and those available on the bigger, faster SATA 3 Gbps units.

These tests will provide a good base line comparison between the performance of the various drives on hand. A few people have complained about recent reviews not testing drives like this in a server / enterprise manner. My response to that is simple, and applies to the 7200.10 as well... This is a desktop drive, and that is how it will be tested. YOu can obviously place any drive you want in a server or for a network share, but even Seagate identifies this as a desktop hard drive.
HD Tach 3.0.1.0 (Quick Benchmark) - HD Tach is a popular benchmark dedicated to the analysis of hard drive performance. It provides a few key pieces of information regarding the drive being tested, and the screen shot below details the reported CPU usage, the access time, the average read speed, and the burst (maximum) speed of the two drives. Lower values are desirable for CPU usage and access time, while higher values are better for average read speed and burst speed.
Comparing the results of the 7200.10 750GB to the 7200.9 500GB shows and increase of approximately 26% in average read speed and 6% in burst speed. 50% more space is nice, but having a whopping 26% faster average read speed is really nice!
