The Basics (continued):

The image below shows the side of the heatsink base where you can see a bit of the fan clamping mechanism, as well as where the heatpipes meet the aluminum base with copper surface that contacts the CPU.

The images below show the copper base of the heatsink. The below left image shows it with a protective blue film in place, and the below right image shows the shiny copper surface revealed.

The picture I took of the exposed base does show that it is smooth and reflective, but it does not do it justice. The surface was a near perfect mirror, and just as flat as it was smooth and shiny.
