Spire Rocketeer V SP-500W 500W Power Supply
|
Conclusion:
The Spire Rocketeer V SP-500W is a good looking modular power supply that kept all the voltage rails within specification. Although it did stay within the typical plus/minus 5%, it did come much closer to the upper limits on two of the three rails than I like to see. That said, all of the voltage rails were extremely stable.
The blue LED fans, sheathed cables, and nice finish on the Rocketeer V SP-500W will be a welcome sight in any case with a side window, as long as it isn't too large. The cable length should be adequate for mid tower cases, but owners of really large tower cases may have a problem getting the cables to reach where needed.
A search of Pricegrabber finds the Spire Rocketeer V SP-500W at prices ranging from $89.99 up to $101.88. This is not what I would call an outstanding bargain, but it may be a reasonable price to pay for a power supply of this caliber, if the voltage rail issues were isolated to our sample.
Pros:
» Modular cable design
» Variable speed, thermally controlled 80mm LED fan
» Manually controlled 120mm LED fan
» Solid voltage rails
Cons:
» Two of three voltage rails close to out of specifications
» Cables may be too short for big cases
» Would benefit from extra 4-pin power connectors
» Not truly for dual PCI Express graphics; only included one cable
