Cooler Master Real Power 550W Power Supply
March 20, 2006

Internal Features:

Opening the unit (which will void any warranty) by removing four screws, you can see the internal components of the power supply. The layout of the components in the Real Power 550W is not a surprise. Most power supplies are layed out in a similar fashion. There are a few things that caught my attention. If you look at the wire coming in from the right side (which is the 120mm fan wire) you can see where it plugs in for power. he fan is not hard-wired, instead it uses a standard 3 pin fan power connection! This is extremely nice! The option to change the fan is always a welcome addition, once again though, a normal person should never open the power supply, and this should never be an issue for them. But then we are not the normal computer user.

In this side view of the components, you can see two large capacitors, as well as an IC, which I assume is what allows the power supply to auto-range the power.

On the other side of the power supply, you can see all of the power connections are hard-wired to the main PCB. This is not a surprise, but what did surprise me is how nicely the wires are sorted and connected. If you look closely, you can see all the 3V+ wires are together, as are the 5V+ and 12V+ cables. Granted this is on the inside of the power supply, which a normal person should never see. However, this goes to show you the time and effort that Cooler Master goes through to help ensure you are using a quality power supply. T

Finally, we have the 120mm blue LED fan. This is a standard Cooler Master 120mm fan, in fact I have several of them running in various systems. They have been operating in those systems for over 6 months, running 24hrs a day. The fan is nearly silent, and can not be distinguished over the other sounds of the computer. It is amazing how quiet you can get your computer without too much effort.
