Enermax Laureate Drive Enclosures
November 22, 2005

Conclusion:

Enermax has made computer parts for over fifteen years and has always kept their name among the highest of quality. They used the word Laureate to describe these enclosures, so I looked up the exact definition and found it described as being the recipient of the highest honor and excellence. This may not be the most accurate way to describe these enclosures, but the Enermax quality is still apparent in its craftsmanship. Both of these aluminum enclosures are very well built and sturdy cases. A few key features aside from the craftsmanship are the blue power LED, the six foot long USB cables and the ability for the 3.5" case to use either SATA or IDE hard drives, to name a few. On the down side, I had an issue with the larger case not working with my NEC DVD burner. Also, a better design of the smaller case would have made the installation a bit easier.

Both the 3.5" EB305C and 5.25" EB505U external enclosures are available in the $40-$45 range at places like Newegg.com and SVC.com.

For the 5.25" external enclosure model EB505U I give 4.5 stars for quality of craftsmanship and 2.5 stars for its compatibility with my DVD drives, with an overall score of 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Final Rating (3.5 out of 5 stars):

EB505U Pros:

• Blue LED indicator
• Long USB cable
• Feels sturdy
• Carrying Case with magnetic lid

EB505U Cons:

• Did not work with NEC model 3520A DVD burner

For the 3.5" external enclosure model EB305C I give 4 out of 5 stars for the overall performance and quality.

Final Rating (4 out of 5 stars):

EB305C Pros:

• Compatible with both IDE and SATA drives
• Blue LED indicator
• Long USB cable
• Feels sturdy
• Carrying Case with magnetic lid

EB305C Cons:

• Tedious installation
• Does not come close to the advertised 480Mbps
