Software:
I will have to tell you Apple does know how to build a feature rich, easy to use MP3 player. However, they still don't have software down. Before you can use any iPod you first have to install Apple's iTunes software. The install is pretty uneventful with a couple of things you have to keep in mind.
 
The first, is that you need the serial number from your iPod to install the software, and next you have to register it to you. Now I guess you could put in fake info on this screen, but that might lead to problems later if you try to purchase music from iTunes. Before you start wondering, no, you can not buy digital music online at any other vendor and use it on your iPod unless it is free of DRM, to which there are no services I am aware of that you can use (legal ones that is). So this install screen has a little more to it than meets the eye:
They aren't "born to be together" they are handcuffed to each other. In case you haven't noticed, I am not very thrilled with this "marriage". Unfortunately, it ties your iPod to iTunes and to Apple for all your music needs. Seems a bit like the other OS company that gets referred to as the "Borg" quite often to me. From my understanding, Apple is dealing with this issue in the European Union, hopefully they will work it all out and it will work out for everyone where you can use your iPod with any software, and music downloading service.
Once you have installed the software, you have to connect up to your iPod and then run through the iTunes setup and register your iPod. Again, you don't get an option here. Welcome to the Apple borg.
