Icy Dock MB453SPF 3 Bay Hot Swap SATA Hard Drive Enclosure
September 25, 2006

Most computer cases include hard drive mounts for three hard drives, and for the average user one or two hard drives is all that is necessary. However, many enthusiasts could use more space than is available inside the case, and others may need to swap hard drives in and out for specific needs. I personally have three hard drives for different operating systems (XP, Vista, Linux), and use them depending on what I feel like doing. In order to use different hard drives for a specific reason, you can either leave them connected and use a boot manager, or you can change the cable to the appropriate drive.

When you run out of space inside your computer for hard drives, you can always use an external enclosure for your drives. Another option is a hot swappable hard drive chassis. Icy Dock has many versions of both of these types of devices, and they have sent over a new enclosure designed to store three SATA I/II hard drives in the space of two standard 5.25" drive bays!

Before taking a look at the enclosure provided for review, let's look at some published data on the Icy Dock MB453SPF...

Features:

Full aluminum built cooling body constructed to fit three drives within a two (5.25”) bay fitting, the MB453 Series follows the tradition of industrial systems' needs for stability, durability, toughness and high sensitivities for mass storage operating conditions. It's equipped with a hot swappable fan that may be detached if confined by depth limitations when integrated, or if replacement is necessary. Our removable fan requires no tools or wiring, simply swap with a new fan and back to operation! It is space saving and user friendly for industrialized system solutions.
