The Basics:
The image below shows the Icy Dock Shuttle MB124E enclosure. The silver portions are constructed of a thin but sturdy aluminum, which appears to be stronger than your typical shell. The blue areas are all rubberized which should add a bit of protection, vibration isolation, and noise reduction. The shiny black area is actually a window where two LEDs will shine through. One indicates drive power, and the other indicates drive activity.
The next image shows the base of the enclosure which is all silver aluminum, with four rubber feet poking through holes in the base. The feet extend into the enclosure and secure the drive on the opposite end. There is a recessed screw in each foot, and these pass all the way through to the cover to hold the whole thing together. You will need a rather small, thin bladed, screwdriver in order to open/close the MB124E.
There are other enclosures with designs that might make installation quicker and easier. Some are tool-less, and others simply provide a little screw driver with the kit. Installation shouldn't be a big deal since most will install a drive just once, but easier is always a welcome feature to me!
The back of the enclosure is shown in the promotional image above, as well as in more detail below. You have a Firewire port, a large rubber bumper of sorts, and a small connection for the AC power adapter. We'll look at the purpose of the rubber bumper later in the review, but at this point I assumed it was some trivial design feature.
The image below shows off the accessories described on the previous page.
