The Basics:
The Digital Foci Memory Card Travel Case is sold in the no nonsense retail packaging shown below:
Out of the packaging, we see that the product is exactly as pictured in Digital Foci's promotional material. A sleek aluminum case with raised portions for added strength. The Digital Foci name is printed on the top, and a large black plastic release is found on one edge to allow access to your memory cards.
The plastic release is operated by pressing in and then hinging the two halves open. The catch provides a noticable, and secure, closure ensuring that all the memory cards you place inside it will stay there until you want them out again. With the case closed, the physical strength of the housing is obvious, and it would take a good deal of effort to break it.
Below we see two views of the internals of the review sample Memory Card Travel Case. The below left image shows all of the empty slots provided for each of the memory card formats listed on the previous page. By enlarging the image you can see that there are four unique patterns created (two in each half), and that some formats nest below other formats to save space. The design is quite clever, and does well to optimize the space required to store up to eight different memory cards.
The above right image shows a few memory cards installed, including a SmartMedia card, a SecureDigital card, and a CompactFlash card. The Secure Digital and CompactFlash cards could actually be stored in the same quadrant of the case, thus providing one example of how you could store 8 cards in the Digital Foci Memory Card Travel Case.
Almost Perfect:
As I was about to go live with a glowing review of the Memory Card Travel Case, I dropped it! Nothing extreme, it simply fell from about waist high, about three feet for me, to the floor (carpeted concrete). The case opened, two of the three memory cards inside scattered across the floor, and then I noticed the worst part... The black plastic catch had snapped right off!
Although this could be the result of a defect on just this unit, the rugged design of the Digital Foci case seems to be all for show. It's not as if I slammed it into a brick wall, it just fell as I can foresee it falling for many people as they go to put it in their pocket or in a camera bag. With no means to hold itself shut, the case isn't worth much to me now... Too bad, I really liked it up until this point.
