Crucial Ballistix 2GB (1GBx2) PC2-6400 DDR2 Memory Kit
October 20, 2006

Conclusion:

The Ballistix 2GB (1GBx2) PC2-6400 DDR2 Memory Kit lives up to Crucial's long standing reputation for quality, while helping to bolster their newer presence in the performance system memory market. The Ballistix line of memory from Crucial has expanded greatly from its early days (just 2+ years ago), and now includes high performance DDR and DDR2 in speeds from PC2-4200 to PC2-8000!

The PC2-6400 modules did well in testing, and the lower timings (4-4-4-12) helped this 2GB kit beat out another kit with more standard, 5-5-5-15 timings.

The one issue encountered during the review was that the overclocking wasn't as impressive as another PC2-6400 kit used on the same test system. A maximum overclock of 920 MHz (DDR2) was achieved, and this is easily beaten by much more 'vanilla' memory that you would not expect to overclock well at all. But, since overclocking is highly subjective, a search of the Internet shows that others have had better results with their attempts to overclock this kit, so there is definitely hope for anyone looking to buy this kit and really squeeze every last bit of performance out of it.

A search of PriceGrabber shows a wide range of prices from the three retailers listed. From a low of $250 (from ZipZoomFly), to a high of $462 (straight from Crucial.com), the difference in price is quite significant. At $250, I would consider this to be a good value for a high performance PC2-6400 DDR2 kit! 2GB of the Transcend PC2-6400 DDR2 also used in this review sells for $364, so it is easy to get excited about greater performance while saving over $100. Checking a listing of all 2GB PC2-6400 DDR2 modules at PriceGrabber shows that there is only one set cheaper, making the value an even more impressive feature.

Offering solid specifications, respectable performance, and a good value to boot, this is an excellent choice for anyone seeking a 2GB kit of 800 MHz DDR2 memory. With these things and more going for it, it is easy to award the Bigbruin.com "Recommended" and "Good Value" award to the Crucial Ballistix 2GB (1GBx2) PC2-6400 DDR2 Memory Kit.

Pros:

» Solid specifications
» Respectable performance
» Lifetime warranty

Cons:

» Didn't overclock as well as other memory on the same test system

Special thanks to Crucial for providing the Crucial Ballistix 2GB (1GBx2) PC2-6400 DDR2 Memory Kit to Bigbruin.com for review!
