Thermalright HR-01 Passive CPU Cooler
February 03, 2006

The Basics (continued):

The HR-01 is designed for multiple processors, however you do need to make sure you get the correct model for your motherboard since the unit ships with only one type of mounting brackets. When I first received the HR-01, Thermalright shipped me the LGA-775 model, however I only have AMD 64, Socket 939 systems, Thermalright provided me with the correct mounting bracket, but when buying one of these keep in mind that you need to choose the right one up front!

Below you can see the cooler with the P4 LGA-775 mounting brackets. This should be familiar to anybody using a LGA-775 processor. To install it, you simply align the push pins to the mounting holes on the motherboard, and press them down. Once they lock into place it should be held securely.

Here you can see the mounting clip used for the AMD K8 (Athlon, Opteron, FX, 64) processors. Once again, if you are familiar with the K8 processors this will be no surprise to you. I was happy to see that they opted to use the clips, rather than screws. Occasionally motherboards do not use screws to mount the bracket to the under plate, rather they use push pin clips. In the middle of the clip is the piece of plastic that rests on the bottom of the heatsink.

Thermalright has included a good size syringe of white thermal paste, nothing else is required to mount the cooler.

One option available for the Thermalright HR-01 cooler is the 120mm fan duct. The fan duct will connect to the HR-01, and your nearby 120mm exhaust fan. Putting this in use will allow your exhaust fan to pull cool air over the HR-01 then push the warm air out the exhaust. This is a nice option and should help improve the cooling capabilities of the HR-01. This is not included with the HR-01, but is available to purchase separately. Not many AMD K8 motherboards (I believe some of the popular DFI motherboards should be able to) will be able to use it, so verify you won't have any problems before spending the extra money on this.
