Real World File Transfers:

For this portion of the review, files were copied to/from the two 16GB USB flash drives on hand, and a stop watch was used to time the duration. The testing was broken up into two sections; large file (a single 2GB ZIP file) and small files (a folder of MP3 files totaling 2.4GB). The Patriot Memory Xporter Rage 16GB USB flash drive was again tested with the two file formats used on the previous page, while the 16GB Kingston drive was only used with a FAT32 format. The system was rebooted between each transfer.



The chart above shows the resulting transfer rate for copying the large file between the flash drives and the SATA 6GB/s 2TB hard drive. What we see is that for reading, the Patriot drive does exceed its published specification, but that the Kingston drive is even faster! When it comes to writing, the Patriot drive is much faster than the Kingston drive (which happens to be encrypting the data as it is written). The special 'performance enhancing format utility' improves write speeds by a small amount, but when it comes to reading it actually makes things worse... something we initially saw with CrystalDiskMark 3.0.



The chart above shows the resulting transfer rate for copying the small files between the flash drives and the SATA 6GB/s 2TB hard drive. The resulting transfer rates fall off from what we saw in the first test, and this time around the 'performance enhancing format utility' manages to decrease the performance of both reading and writing.
