Icy Dock has sponsored a handful of reviews at Bigbruin.com lately, and they are back again with yet another new product! This one is a bit different than the previous fare for two main reasons, the interface and the size of the drive supported. In past reviews we have looked at external enclosures and internal hot swap bays designed to connect via SATA or USB 2.0, and all of them were for use with 3.5" drives.

What we have up for review this time is Icy Dock model number MB124E, which is an external enclosure that connects via Firewire and supports 2.5" drives. The sleek and understated housing of the MB124E is shown in the promotional image below.


Before taking a look at the ins and outs of the Icy Dock MB124E External Firewire 2.5" Drive Enclosure, let's take a look at some published data from the Icy Dock website...

Packaging:

The MB124E is sold in the attractive silver box shown below. Although they don't reference it as such on their website, they call the product the "Shuttle Disk" on the packaging. In addition, you get a good look at the product, some of the basic features and specifications, and some simple usage suggestions.

Inside the box we see that everything is protected by form fitting pockets in a plastic form, and most items are individually wrapped in plastic. You receive the MB124E housing, an AC power adapter (US plug with a European style power converter), a heavy duty Firewire cable, a manual, a bag of screws for securing your drive, and a velvet-like bag that will do well to protect your enclosure while traveling.
