Sounds like you have the basics for a decent overclock, but two things catch my eye... The stock cooler may limit things. You will get something out of it, but not as much as if you got a good aftermarket cooler. And how is that memory configured? 3.25GB is an odd number. Like a 1GB, a 2GB, and a 256MB module? Matched pairs might be best.

Othrewise, just start raising the frontside bus with everything else fixed and see how high you can go... but be reasonable and keep an eye on CPU temperatures and stability.

I'm guessing he has two 2gb modules, but either the system or the 32bit os is only recognizing 3.25gb. Seems about right with a 512mb video card. If you in fact have a 64bit os and still only see 3.25gb you need to enable memory remapping in the bios.
Follow the links Dr. Feelgood posted and that should get you off to a good start. I can't stress enough how important it is to get a better cpu cooler though. Until you do I wouldn't go beyond 2.8ghz - 3.0ghz. and step lightly when it comes to vcore voltages.

Do you know what stepping the q6600 is? B3 or G0?

My WinXP SP3 detects only 3GB of my 2x2GB DDR2800 RAMs.

Shouldn't Vista SP1 make all 4GB visible?

32-Bit XP? Yes - It will only see about 3GB. You need a 64-Bit OS to access more memory.

Like Doc said, a 32bit OS will only detect about that 3.25GB, even Vista. You need either Vista 64 bit or XP 64 bit to see all 4 gigs. Aside from that I would get a decent aftermarket cooler before overclocking too much. There are quite a few decent coolers out there that should fit whatever budget you might have.

A new cooler is almost mandatory for a good OC like everyone else has already stated. A OC of around 3.6 should be fairly easy to get after you get one.

I read about this beforehand, that Vista (w/o SP1) will only report 3.25GB. So I assumed XP will report my 4GB as 3.25GB. But it only sees 3GB. Oh, well. Will Windows7 32-bit see all 4GB?

By the way, I was able to OC my 3.2Ghz P4 to 3.8Ghz on stock cooling with no problem Smile

Your overclock really depends on the cooler you have and the VID of your Q6600.

You can easily find out the VID (stock voltage) of your Q6600 by using CoreTemp.

My Q6600 is a G0 but with a lame VID of 1.325 (I think it's the worst VID for a Q6600).

Most new Q6600s come with a VID of 1.325. So, if yours has a VID of 1.325 like mine, I don't think you can get an overclock of more than 3.4GHz.

I personally have a Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P motherboard and I could easily overlock my Q6600 to 3.2GHz (800x4) but it was VERY VERY hard to get it stable at 3.4GHz and I needed to bump up the Vcore to something like 1.5V (!!!).

So, first of all, get a decent Air Cooler or even better, go with Water-Cooling.

Then, you should (super) easily get an overclock of 3.2GHz. Afterwards, it's up to your Q6600 VID, Cooling Setup and PATIENCE ( Grin ) to try and get an higher overclock of 3.4GHz or even 3.6GHz.

GOOD LUCK and keep us updated... Wave
