If I buy a 10/100/1000 switch and plug it into my 10/100 router will giga capable devices communicate at giga speeds if plugged into the switch? Or do I need a giga router to accomplish this?

I need to be able to stream a crapload of data to a few different places possibly all at the same time.

I'm pretty sure you will need a giga router for all of your devices to operate at gigaspeed within your intranet. My switch wouldn't allow those speeds unless it was attached to a gigabit router.

If the devices are plugged into the switch, then they should transfer the data to other devices plugged into the switch at Giga speed.

Yeah - Just get a switch with enough ports for all your computers. Then just run a single cable from the switch to the router for access to new pr0n... I mean the Internet.

Hang on. If I understand this, you have:

(Internet)--(10/100 Router) --- (10/100/1000 Switch)=====(various computers on network, all with gig-Ethernet)

If this is the case, and the switch ONLY goes to your router and to your computers, then all the computers will use giganet and the bottleneck will be to the internet. More than likely, however, you're not doing 100 mbits to the ISP so there's no point to upgrade the router. Upgrading the switch will allow your computers to transmit all data at gig or lower speeds.

Hope that makes sense.

You all speak the same thing and yes thats what I thought, the router will not bottleneck the switch.

I was just making sure data would not travel through the switch to the router and back to the switch to a second machine.

This is what I though was the case if for no other reason than there are VERY few residential grade gig routers but a ton of switches.

Now, a second question. If I build a server do I even need a router? Can I use the server (2 NICS installed) to control the network and just use the switch?

Internet to one nic, second nic to switch, switch to rest of computers? Can I plug a wireless AP into the switch for the laptop?

Am I talented enough to configure all this?

Not saying anything about you personally, but that question sounds like the hard one! Not a job I would tackle!

Yes, use a router. You don't want your server directly on the big I.
