I haven't done anything special for heat. Just keep fans controlled. It could be that my Abit MB reports the temp wrong. It has the newest bios but I haven't used anything else. I used 4 instances of CPU burn-in for about 8 minutes. The 4 cores were at 100% got the cpu up to 52deg and stayed there for the last 6 mins or so. Bioshock gets it into the high 40's. Attached pic shows what I was doing.

Hi

Overclocked my q6600 to 3mhz with no problems, just set fsb to 1333 and left everything else on auto.

Ran 3dmark06 and temps didnt get above 59C in core temp, but that my be due to liquid cooling Grin

Can you post the rest of your systems specs? Motherboard, memory, video card, psu and cpu cooler.

I’m building a new computer, below are the parts I have so far.
I’d like to Overclock to about 3.0Ghz on Air.

What settings do I need to make in the BIOS to achieve 3.0Ghz?
Also, please include memory settings.

Thank you,
Novak

Looks like you have the right stuff to make your goal happen... But as always, overclocking is part art, and part science, so you can't promise anything.

Have a look at what acruxksa has said in this thread and it should help. His setup is similar, so if anything his settings may help you.

Start slow and post your milestones so we can chime in on anything...

I seem to be hitting a wall with my Q6600 overclock. I get to 350FSB with only changing the Vcore to 1.3625. It runs Prime95 stable for 10 hours +.

If I go to 390MHz FSB, I cant seem to get Prime to run more than 30 mins. I have tried Vcore as high as 1.425. I upped Northbridge to 1.55v, Frontside term to 1.3, Vpll to 1.6.

I have memory set to 6-6-6-18 just to be loose, with Vmem of 2.1.

What else can I try? Should I start messing with reference voltages (CPU ref, Northbridge ref)? Southbridge voltage?

Is there a way to know if Vcore or memory ior Northbridge s the culprit?

Thanks

TexasVol,
Lower the cpu multiplier to 7 and raise the fsb and memory to 400 Mhz (800Mhz DDR2). This will remove the cpu from the equation since it will only be running at 2.8Ghz. if it is unstable, then your likely culprit is either the memory or the fsb and you may want to raise one or both their voltages (do this in small increments with caution). It already appear that you have raised these a bit, so I'm not sure if you should go too much higher. What mobo and memory?

Just fyi, 3150Mhz for a q6600 is still very acceptable. Not all quad cpu's will reach 3.4 or 3.6ghz. without knowing anything about your setup I would guess your cpu is the culprit.

I would also point out that at a certain point, these cpu's show a huge jump in temperature for only a small gain in speed. My cpu for instance runs great at 9x367 (3.3Ghz), but is 3-4 degrees celsius hotter that at 8x400 (3.2Ghz) with the same voltage setting. Because of this I eventually lowered mine down to 3.2Ghz. It's much cooler, with no noticeable loss in performance.

Thanks acruxksa! That is a great idea.

I have an ASUS P5k Deluxe Wifi. It has a zillion (ok, ten or so) voltage settings and reference settings. I'm not even sure what some of them do (especially the reference settings). The Vcore, Vmem I understand and know the limits. I cant seem to find the spec limits for Northbridge or Southbridge.

At any rate, this gets me moving again. When I get back in town, I'll do some more experimentation and see what I find.

Tex
