Smile

I have a Gateway 510M3 computer with I think a 250w power supply. Is this good enough for the new Windows Vista coming out??

The only way a powersupply would be affected is because of the OTHER system requirements of Vista.

I did a quick spec search for Gateway 510M3 - nothing on the web.

If your system is above Vista's requirements, then you wont have to upgrade - which means your powersupply is fine.

If you have to upgrade your CPU, video card, harddrive, and/or memory - then your current powersupply may not provide enough energy to the system.

Looks like it's a:

2.8-GHz Intel Pentium 4
512MB DDR400 SDRAM
120GB hard drive
Integrated Intel Extreme Graphics 2
8X DVD+/-RW drive
integrated sound card
Microsoft Windows XP Professional.

So with that in mind it does meet the min requirements for Vista. However, that doesn't mean Vista will run well.

You will need to check if what ever sound card is there will have Vista drivers (can't use anything but Vista certified drivers), and if the video card does as well (should).

If not you will need to upgrade one or both of them, and that will add to your power consumption.

Again, minimum standards don't equal a good experience. I would HIGHLY recommend that you have at least 2GB of RAM before trying to run Vista on that computer.

wow, 2GB is a lot for that computer...might need to toss what is in there now for 2x1GB kit or 4x512MB...assuming it has 4 slots.

I've been running Vista on a lot less, but integrated graphics won't let you run Aero, which is one of the key things MS is touting

I can't understand why you'd want to run such an intensive OS, windows XP suffices just fine. Why waste system resources on running useless features that will probably even be more of a pain if anything for a while? Seems to me like sticking with XP for a while would be the better decesion. Not that this matters much to most of us, Vista won't be released for home users until early 07' at the very best.

XP is Vista's competitor...I personally don't know anyone who is gonna plunk down $200 for Vista. I will probably run it at home (once I get my free copy from MSDN...and only because I'll need to support it)

I'll be getting a free copy as well, doubt I'll install it though. Yay free software through my school.

Errrr BS.

So if you rank the competition for Vista, what do you see most prominently?

The No. 1 competitor in a sense right out of the chute is Windows XP Service Pack 2. There are a lot of happy users. Getting those people to upgrade their software or buy a new PC -- the fact that people are generally happy is a certainly a barrier to as rapid adoption as we might like to see.
