And system administration is easy once you learn it. I like it because everything is compiled from source (most is anyway) so it builds itself to work with your hardware and other software better than an RPM-based distribution (like RH). It also uses a better, UNIX-type of updating and installing system, called "emerge".
I'm installing on another PC in my basement right now, always fun :-). And you learn the interior of the Linux OS during the install process as there is no GUI installer.
And IceNine, nice article on UNIX. I'm going to have to try FreeBSD out next, lol. |
I had a 2.3% increse using gentoo. I have seen cases from 40% increse to cases where there was 0% increse.
Definatly not a good for his first linux.
RH 9 i guess is ok for his first one since he already installed it. _________________ I am lord Moloch. That of your titan. Now bow before me you mere mortal. |

Use a layer3 install for Gentoo and it's fairly quick. Just have to compile a few packages and the kernel and you're set to fly. And don't compile xorg-x11 and KDE (and all 92 other dependencies) like I did. I was just, too lazy to download the CD with it precompiled. _________________ 5 home-built PCs, ASUS A6Jc Laptop, and a PowerEdge 2650 - all running Gentoo. Now if only I can get a car and plane to run it. Take a look at my Gallery! |
