If you're looking for a little bit of a challenge, but want a strong, reliable, and fast distro of Linux, you can also try www.gentoo.org I use it on my gaming PC which gets about a 30% higher framerate in certain games, with the use of Cedega and Wine (Windows Emulators) than in real Windows XP. And system administration is easy once you learn it. I like it because everything is compiled from source (most is anyway) so it builds itself to work with your hardware and other software better than an RPM-based distribution (like RH). It also uses a better, UNIX-type of updating and installing system, called "emerge".

I'm installing on another PC in my basement right now, always fun :-). And you learn the interior of the Linux OS during the install process as there is no GUI installer.

And IceNine, nice article on UNIX. I'm going to have to try FreeBSD out next, lol.

I had a 2.3% increse using gentoo. I have seen cases from 40% increse to cases where there was 0% increse.

Definatly not a good for his first linux.

RH 9 i guess is ok for his first one since he already installed it.
