Computer Freezes

Lately my main machine has started to freeze up randomly. Doesn't require much to be going on, but the screen just freezes Windows still visible and you have to reboot.

Happened tonight, rebooted, and froze again within 2 minutes... So I rebooted into the BIOS to look for any weird settings... and it froze while in the BIOS!!

Think its power related? Or maybe the motherboard?

ASUS A7N8x Motherboard
XP2200+ CPU
(2) 40 GB ATA-133 Maxtors
DVD ROM
CDRW
AGP Video, PCI Sound and TV card
420W Enlight PSU

Freezing in Bios??? That can't be good. There are not that many things that could be the problem. Do the regular parts replacement thing, powersupply first. Memeory second (doubtful) Can't be HDD or optical drives, they haven't been accessed yet, same with any driver or audio device.

Could be beginning signs of BIOS DEATH!!! You may try and reflash your bios. First thing I would do, (won't help the problem), is replace the bios battery. They have been known to cause Bios Death. The stock Asus Batteries were sometimes low or even dead. I replaced mine and have had none of the A7N8X problems known.

If you see anything else strange, let me know.

Is'nt your mobo a refurb?? I would suspect it first.

I left the side off for a while yesterday and it didn't do it, but the temps were fine to begin with... Then I flashed the BIOS anyway (from 1004 to 1006) and it has run all day without problem...

error in bios can be caused by bug

Well... It did it again, and now it won't wake up again!! I have cleared the CMOS, unplugged it from the wall, and so on... and it just won't boot... not even a beep.

Too tired to really mess with it tonight, but thats the machine with all my stuff on it... Bang Head

Well, a different psu and ddr did nothing... The mobo? Sad
