Looking to buy a DVD burner.. But i'm totally confused as to which one i should get..

I'm looking Dual Layer burners.

I would prefer a burner that burns at 4x on DL media. Also what is this bit rate setting thing i hear about? and rip locks?

I was thinking about the LG 4160 burner
Lite On 1633S
NEC ND-3500A
but i dont think the above 2 drives support 4X DL burning.

I mostly want the drive to rip movies (yes i know they cant be directly burned onto single layer media) and to "back up" my xbox games.

Any help is good help.. thanks guys

I've been nothing but happy with the ND-3500A's I bought recently. Newegg also has them pretty cheap.

Available in Beige, Black, and (thankfully) Silver.

If i remember where I read about them i'd dig up some review links, but as I remember the reviews were in approval of the drive especially at the price point its going at. Currently $68 on newegg's front page.

I was happy with my (older) NEC DVD burner (not D/L)

But I can't help with the newer drives...................

Another vote for NEC. I have the 2500a that I updated the firmware on to burn dual layer. Although I have yet to bite the bullet and lay out the $$$ for any dual layer media to know if it works or not. It does burn single layer like a champ though.

Does seem very good for the price its only 82 bucks in canada. And i hear the rip locks can be taken off by using special patches..

Now just gotta convice my dad i'm not blowing money (he seems to think every bit of technology is a waste of money)

Rip locks? Is that a Windows thing or something on the new (3500A) drive? I just plugged mine in and started ripping/burning...
