Hey all. Just wanted to know what you all thought of Red Hat Linux 9. I am in the process of installing it right behind me. What are some of it's pros and cons? I know we run it on our servers here at work (I work for an ISP and I do Comp repair and Internet tech support). Just curious. Thanks! Wave

Con's - It's old. And not supported any more.

Unless you really need/want it, I'd use a more uptdate & supported Linux. (CentOS is really the current version of Red Hat).

If your want linux, get a real operating system. Go for a BSD OS. I prefer freebsd. However thats just me.

Anyway. Last version of RH I used was 7.0. I found it decent for the windows person because it had everything and the kitchen sink. I just dont like that. I also have never realy embraced the RH comunity nor did they embrace me.

I have always found better help/suport/response time in the slackware communities. As a result I use a lot of slackware varients. Though I have not used the "official" slackware in some time. (bout a year).

Is this your first linux? You wont be disapointed, trust me. The only thing windows has over *nix is gaming. And no, thats not because windows is more suited. Its simply because more develpers and users. There are games for *nix but not as many as windows. But for your everyday computers/interet etc its more then fine.

Good luck.

Hmmm, BSD isn't Linux, it's UNIX. And yes, there is a difference (although moderate). Anyway, consider Gentoo Linux. It takes a bit longer to install, but you really learn the interior of Linux in the install process.

Otherwise, Fedora Core 4 (final should be released this Monday) is the latest of the Red Hat line for most users, if you don't want to go with Red Hat Enterprise or CentOS (RHEL repackaged and free to use).

Fedora is basically the newest version of Red Hat - just not the corporate pay for it edition.

Well as I said, CentOS is the enterprise version of Red Hat, just for free.

I was only attempting to clarify that Fedora is actually a RedHat sponsored project. CentOS is not affiliated with RedHat in any way.

I didnt say bsd was linux. I said get a real OS like BSD OS.

Another OS I have started a few friends on and they had no problems was yoper. I havent used in in about a year but I remember it wasnt to bad. Most my friends wanted something simple yet easy which I felt it fit perfectly into.

Yoper makes installation very easy. Too easy for me - I didn't get any configuration options.

If you're looking for a little bit of a challenge, but want a strong, reliable, and fast distro of Linux, you can also try www.gentoo.org I use it on my gaming PC which gets about a 30% higher framerate in certain games, with the use of Cedega and Wine (Windows Emulators) than in real Windows XP. And system administration is easy once you learn it. I like it because everything is compiled from source (most is anyway) so it builds itself to work with your hardware and other software better than an RPM-based distribution (like RH). It also uses a better, UNIX-type of updating and installing system, called "emerge".

I'm installing on another PC in my basement right now, always fun :-). And you learn the interior of the Linux OS during the install process as there is no GUI installer.

And IceNine, nice article on UNIX. I'm going to have to try FreeBSD out next, lol.
