I don't really recommend Gentoo as a first Linux install, it really helps if you're already familiar with Linux (and bash).

As was already said, RH9 is old. It's also bloated and slow. I haven't used Fedora or CentOS, but if you want something that will be up and running in no time and is decently fast, go for Ubuntu.

A friend of mine (ThePMG) actually switched from Gentoo to Ubuntu after using Gentoo for a long time. I personally prefer Gentoo, but for someone that's looking for minimal involvement, Ubuntu is pretty good.

I have to disagree in that it is good for new linux users, as right fromthe getgo, they can learn the backend of the Linux environment and learn how to manage it with care, rather than "oh noes...i can't find c:\!!! time to go find a linux forum and spam for answers!

If you're looking for a little bit of a challenge, but want a strong, reliable, and fast distro of Linux, you can also try www.gentoo.org I use it on my gaming PC which gets about a 30% higher framerate in certain games, with the use of Cedega and Wine (Windows Emulators) than in real Windows XP. And system administration is easy once you learn it. I like it because everything is compiled from source (most is anyway) so it builds itself to work with your hardware and other software better than an RPM-based distribution (like RH). It also uses a better, UNIX-type of updating and installing system, called "emerge".

I'm installing on another PC in my basement right now, always fun :-). And you learn the interior of the Linux OS during the install process as there is no GUI installer.

And IceNine, nice article on UNIX. I'm going to have to try FreeBSD out next, lol.

I had a 2.3% increse using gentoo. I have seen cases from 40% increse to cases where there was 0% increse.

Definatly not a good for his first linux.

RH 9 i guess is ok for his first one since he already installed it.

I also put Mandriva 10.2 Limiited on the same drive so I ahve them both. I really like Red Hat 9 but not as crazy about Mandriva/Mandrake. I was going to experiment with Gentoo but all the recompiling made me want to wait a bit. I think I got bit by the Linux bug real hard. I really like it! And all the options are making my head spin. God save the penguin!

Use a layer3 install for Gentoo and it's fairly quick. Just have to compile a few packages and the kernel and you're set to fly. And don't compile xorg-x11 and KDE (and all 92 other dependencies) like I did. I was just, too lazy to download the CD with it precompiled.
