OK, I know a few of you are big time Linux bigots so I figured I'd get your suggestions and experiences.

Right now my e-mail server is VERY old, like the hardware is at least 5 yrs old and the software hasn't had an update in 3 yrs. The AV has been kept up to-date but the rest hasn't. Various reason (such as paid upgrades that I didn't feel worthy). Now however it is so far behind in technology that it might as well not have any anti-spam capabilities.

I am currently hosting some businesses e-mail and if they continue with me then I already have a plan (one of which is they are paying for all the upgrades). If not, then I'm going to go as cheap as possible which means... FREE! Grin Because I'll be upgrading the hardware so no extra really for software.

I'm looking for something very cheap to free, should be easy enough to manage (don't have time to spend a day configuring then several hours a week maintaining). MUST have SSL abilities web mail abilities, handle multiple domains & account alias. Would like calendering and contacts, and VERY important is Anti-Spam & Anti-Virus. Also doing updates needs to be very easy to do - Again time thing.

Now, it doesn't HAVE to run under *nix, but I have a feeling that'll be the place where I can get all of that for little to nothing in software.

Mail is my weak point...but Qmail Toaster works nicely. http://www.qmailtoaster.com/

It does have antispam and, IIRC, anti-virus capabilities all with the install instructions given. If not already given, then I'm sure ClamAV can be used with it with some extra steps. I can't be certain about the SSL capabilities, however. It does do domain aliases and whatnot.

qmail toaster supports SSL and Webmail via squirrelmail. I've never used it myself, but it looks like it might meet most of your requirements. Not sure about calendering though.

Either way, I'm betting if it doesn't have an option/feature you are looking for, there will be a howto on the net somewhere that will show you how to add it.

SME Server Might be worth a look also, but I'm not sure how configurable it is. I used it several years ago for my personal email server and it worked quite well. It was also easy to setup. It may not have all the options you want though. Just another possibility.

Yea... so this is the problem... not looking to read howto's on how to tweak things and add things. I want to click a check box and go.

Many other things I would rather do than spend hours configuring, tweaking, and updating my e-mail server.

No light way of putting this other than use Windows and a Windows-based email server. You and I both know ease-of-configuration isn't Linux's niche.

I haven't tried this program out in years, but you may find some easy-to-configure email stuff in Webmin.

Look into SME Server. It's uses a web interface for configuration and is a stand alone linux version. link is in my post above. It's about as close as you will ever get to check box configuration with linux.

SME Server.......SME Server............SME Server.........Seriously.......Look Into it.

Briefly look at SME, I knew about it already (just never looked into it Laughing ).

And B|F- Yea... I was hoping. Not that I mind, I just found that I don't spend the time doing the care and maintenance that is really required to run a "uber" system. So things get a little behind and tht can be bad.

I was thinking of Webmin, too. Would obviously give more than mail, but it should be easy to install, operate, and maintain.

yes, webmin is more of a gui then manually editing conf files...but that does require apache, but shouldn't be a problem since you want webmail.
