I would go for a fresh install. i admit im bias for i have never used the repair install b/c i never cared if i lost data or have to reinstall apps.

As for some tips, just make sure u get key/registration info for all the programs you use and get them ready on a txt doc and save it on a floppy.

Use multiple partitions, for example give the windows install ~10gigs, downloads ~5-10gigs (unless u are a download a lot of stuff), and then data making up the rest. This will let u reinstall when every u need to w/o having to worry about losing data/redownloading stuff. As well u can then compress the data u dont use much easier this way.

And before u do anything make sure u backup all the data u want to keep, a one commonly forgotton is bookmarks.... Bang Head

Partitioning the HD sounds good to me. The HD that has the OS (XP) and all of the SW applications installed is a 200 GIG and I also have a second 60 GIG drive installed.

What about creating three partitions on the 200 GIG, a small one for the OS, 10-15 gig for the applications and the balance for data? The biggest problem I have with this upgrade are the applications. Alot of the applications that I use regularly have many updates and patches which I will have to reinstall. My copy of XP Pro does not have SP2 and I will have to download it and the other necessary OS updates. That is easy compared to installing the applications and doing the updates and patches for them.

If creating a dedicated partition just for the OS is a practical concept, about how big should it be? I'm not sure how big XP is. Thanks in advance for your replys!!

You can always slipstream SP2 into your XP CD

i knew their was something like that 4 sp2 b\c u do the same w/ sp1, i never looked 4 it before(thx 4 link). i just installed sp2 for the first time about 2 weeks ago (on a fresh clean install).

as for how much space for the windows install, right after the install windows xp takes up about 3gigs, lets assume u have a 1gig paging file, so thats 4gigs. i usally give it about 10 gigs and do some clean up when i get 2-3gigs remaining.

the bad thing about installing ur apps on another partion is that when u do reinstall windows some programs will not work b\c they are missing some registry keys.

for people who like to reinstall alot:
Windows XP Unattended Installation
Windows XP Unattended Installation, Part II
