Is there any chance that they make an LCD monitor with a greater than 60hz refresh rate??

The only thing holding me back right now from going the LCD route with a spanned array is the fact that I get sea-sick if I look at an LCD display for more then 5 minutes. ...and thats even just doing email, spreadsheets, etc. Couldn't image trying to game on an LCD. Even looking at this laptop display makes me ill if I do it for a varying number of minutes.

From prior experience, 70hz is all that I need to keep from having to go lay down and take a nap..

What I'm looking for is:
19" wide or standard
thin edge frame
800:1 contrast or greater
8ms or less response.
cheap since I'm looking to buy at least 3 of them.

True... Resfresh rate is alot different on an LCD, as they don't do the flicker thing like on CRTs.

They only change the pieces of the image that need to be changed during a "refresh" and don't strain eyes with the constant pulsing of a CRT.

My bet is you aren't running it in native resolution. LCD's can look really bad when you don't.

I know I got an LCD and won't go back to a CRT. If I look at a CRT at less than 75hz, I fell funny. Heck sometimes even at 75hz, I tried to run at 85hz+ when ever possible.

yeah... thats what I'm reading..

Dont know what it is then that makes me ill when looking at these screens.

My laptop is at the only res it'll do. 1280x800x32bit @ 60hz.

I'm gonna guess now that its the response rate. Theres alot of movement on screen from CAD-E work and jumping back & forth between spreadsheets and other documents. This laptop causes my illness the worst compared to other LCD's. My ex's 19" LCD w/8ns response doesn't cause it as bad, I can maybe last an hour or two on it before having to look away.

when you do run LCD screens at a res lower than its max, it is blurry and hard on your eyes. No matter how large the screen is, the most important part is the res you will use. Don't get a 1600x1200 LCD if you want to run 1280x1024.

Oh yeah.. I learned that about 12 years ago on my first laptop... LCD are meant to run at one resolution..

I'd like to span (3) 1600x1200 or (3)1280x1240 LCD's with a Matrox TripleHead. I get claustrophobic in anything less that 1600x1200 on 21" glass.

Check out http://computer.howstuffworks.com/monitor5.htm and you might learn a little something new (cause I just did too).

Anyways, you should be aware that the refresh rate is for CRTs only. The response time is literally that; how long it takes for the crystal in your LCD to respond to the changes issued as commands by your computer (thus, grey to grey or black to white refresh rates can be vastly different). That's why an older LCD with a high response time will give you mouse trails (remember those?) or ghosting during video playback.

If you're feeling ill, the LCD should not be the cause. In actuality, LCD screens are better for your eyes than CRT screens. This is because an LCD is a panel of color changing crystals with a backlight so that your eyes are looking at a fixed object as opposed to a CRT which uses beams of photons on a phosphorous coating to react and create a screen. It's basically the difference in looking at a pen on your desk with a spotlight or a hologram of a pen on your desk.

I would siggest that you turn down the brightness of your LCD (or increasing it) and see how you feel. Also, try using a smaller resolution (640x480 instead of 1024x768) to reduce eye strain.

My Viewsonic VX922 is 19" 2Ms and does i think 75Hz refresh.

I will be honest the contrast ratio most monitors are supporting (2-5000:1) is completly useless for a desktop environment. My viewsonic is 500 or 350:1 i think and i have it turned WAY down. the only reason i could see needing/watning 500+:1 would be for a TV that you would be sitting 10+ feet away from.

I just got one of the new NEC 24" LCD's, and had to turn the brightness down to about 10%. At the default (100%) I was getting sick, headaches, and my eyes hurt.

So I have to agree will Kilamon on the brightness...

The other side, is make sure you're sitting far enough away from a large screen. My 24" is aa little more than an arms length away, and probably should be back a little further.
