Check out http://computer.howstuffworks.com/monitor5.htm and you might learn a little something new (cause I just did too).

Anyways, you should be aware that the refresh rate is for CRTs only. The response time is literally that; how long it takes for the crystal in your LCD to respond to the changes issued as commands by your computer (thus, grey to grey or black to white refresh rates can be vastly different). That's why an older LCD with a high response time will give you mouse trails (remember those?) or ghosting during video playback.

If you're feeling ill, the LCD should not be the cause. In actuality, LCD screens are better for your eyes than CRT screens. This is because an LCD is a panel of color changing crystals with a backlight so that your eyes are looking at a fixed object as opposed to a CRT which uses beams of photons on a phosphorous coating to react and create a screen. It's basically the difference in looking at a pen on your desk with a spotlight or a hologram of a pen on your desk.

I would siggest that you turn down the brightness of your LCD (or increasing it) and see how you feel. Also, try using a smaller resolution (640x480 instead of 1024x768) to reduce eye strain.
