Not true, EC. Depends what market you're looking at. Linux and other UNIX derivitives have the server market pegged. In the desktop market, Mac and Linux may be a small percentage, but they're growing in numbers. I found out last week there's a Linux application called Amarok that is comparable to iTunes. I don't have any iPod (nor do I want one), but the features are awesome. IT fetches lyrics for songs as they're played and cool stuff like that. _________________ 5 home-built PCs, ASUS A6Jc Laptop, and a PowerEdge 2650 - all running Gentoo. No, true. Niche market products, do not compete with windows.
Mac & Linux on the desktop aren't there. Not debating technical abilities, just stating the fact. The width and depth of applications aren't there for the general computing population.
Name me a good e-mail server that offers all the functionality of say... Exchange? There are none. While some emulate some of exchanges features, they do not integrate in the same enterprise login and have the same abilities, specially at the corp level.
As for server... Same thing. Try making Linux/Unix work across a WAN with using the same user name and password, that is centrally controlled/managed and changed. Are there possibly solutions? Yep. Have I ever actually seen them in the corp world? Nope.... wonder why?
They Linux/Mac world needs less fanbois and more IT people. Then, it stands a chance to replace MS. And let me tell you... I am counting the days until MS has some real competition. They need it, and we need it.
As I've said before, I use Linux on a dailiy basis now, so I'm not a MS fanboi. Heck I'm trying to figure out how to get my laptop running Suse to connect to my Nortel VPN's) |

Its all about user interface and software...
If there were the same applications/games available for Linux as there were for Win - Linux would take off. Being able to walk into Walmart, Staples, Office Supply, or EB like 99% of the PC users do and find programming for Windows is why people stick with it. That same 99% or higher of users also need to have the easy interface of Windows because they dont know how to recompile kernels, or do even simple tasks of uninstalling a program(even in Windows LOL).
If all I ever did was surf pr0n, do email, IM, and spreadsheets - well Linux would be perfect. ...but without all of whats available for Win32, Linux will take a back seat to MS's spawn.
I pray for the day that Linux and Windows are on equal ground, I'm about sick of the bullcrap that these new licenses require from MS. |

And until that happens, Linux/Mac will not take ove MS. That is a key reason why Windows continues to stay so popular.
As for the recomplining needed for LInux, I'm sure there's a way to do an automated process (and no you don't need to point it out) to do it for the average Joe. They just don't do it, because Linux is for the technical people, not the average Joe. |

did you guys miss this part in the eula article?
Quote: | But I'll bet that most of my readers are exactly the kinds of people that end up buying retail copies of Windows and installing them on many different machines - or virtual machines, as I discussed above. Windows Activation, introduced with Windows XP, insures that you don't install the same copy of Windows on more than one machine at a time. That's fine - annoying, but fine. But clause 15 of the new Vista EULA - "REASSIGN TO ANOTHER DEVICE" - goes way beyond that.
a. Software Other than Windows Anytime Upgrade. The first user of the software may reassign the license to another device one time. If you reassign the license, that other device becomes the "licensed device."
b. Windows Anytime Upgrade Software. The first user of the software may reassign the license to another device one time, but only if the license terms of the software you upgraded from allows reassignment.
As I read this, you go to the store and buy a copy of Vista, which you install on a PC you had in your office. A year later, another PC becomes available that's a bit more up to date, so you decide to transfer your Vista license to that machine.
You're now finished with that Vista license. Done. Game over, man. Whether you shelled out $199 for Home Basic or broke the bank with the $399 Ultimate makes no difference. You've reassigned the license twice, and that's all that Microsoft allows. |
Unless MS comes out with a new version in a few years this will be horrendous for many people who upgrade every year or two...especially the members of these forums. I reinstall xp all the time, according to that I would have to buy another copy of vista every other time I need to install windows
Sure I will do that Mr Billy Gates |
