I am probably well out of the loop, but just learned that Radiohead's new 'album' comes out tomorrow without the use of a record label. It is only available for purchase or download from Radiohead.com, and while the price is fixed for physical media versions, you set the price for the download! Pay what you want, and FREE is an option!

Trent Reznor also announced that Nine Inch Nails' next album will be released without a record label, but he hasn't figured out exactly how yet.

What do you think? Will this be the way of the future, and the record labels and iTunes will be in big trouble? Or will this be a big flop?

I think and hope that is is the way things are going to go.

I know the Eagles new album is the same way. Online at their site or through Walmart (I think it's Walmart anyways, which surprised me kinda).

I still miss the days of 10"/12" LP vinyl records and the album art that went with them Sad .....As for this new way of delivering music, I'm with Hellfire; I think it's a great way to get the music out to the people.

Yea, besides they make so many tracks and only end up putting several onto the CD. The best might not make it because of somebody's personal taste.

This way, they can release all the tracks they do and let the public decide whether they like them or not. And maybe make a little more money off those tracks.

I see it this way, assume they make 20 tracks in a session. 12 make the CD "cut". They put those other 8 tracks up on their site and make a little extra cash for each of those, that they already did the work on. Then maybe one of those takes off and becomes a hit (never know it has happened in the past).

I think it's a great business idea. I'm sure they will make more money than the conventional way.

I do agree with Charlie thou .... the album art is well worth buying the album/cd. Here are some of my favs. You just can't beat the info and pics you got with an album Smile

Albums are a bit before my time... at least as a fan of music. But, I did like it when CDs came in the "long boxes". Remember those? I used to decorate my dorm room with those like mini posters.

Yea, albums are a bit before my time as well LOL

Think when I started getting into my own music it was either Tape or CD.

I do remember my father used to get Albums though...god that was a long time ago Yikes

What, I had albums growing up! My first one, still have it too, was Kiss - Detroit Rock City.

You still have the album art on your livingroom wall?
