ioSafe recently sent over one of their 500GB Solo rugged USB external hard drives, and it passed the test when it came to performance and disaster protection. In the review it was barbecued at over 750 degrees, and in the end the data on the hard drive was still safe!

ioSafe is offering up a 500GB Solo to the person that can come up with the most interesting new way to test the disaster protection provided. Between the various reviews conducted around the world, and tests that ioSafe has conducted in-house, the fire and water protection have been challenged rather extensively. But, this doesn't mean that there aren't tons of new ways for the device's disaster protection to be proven.

Come up with an interesting new way to test the ioSafe Solo and not only will you win one of your own, but ioSafe just might use your idea to demonstrate the capabilities of the device at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show.

How To Enter / Rules:

ยป Post your ideas for disaster testing the ioSafe Solo in this thread or in the related discussion thread on Bigbruin.com's Facebook page.

ยป The winner will be announced by October 05, 2009

ยป Competition open to entrants from anywhere in the world
ยป Rules subject to change

Place the ioSafe on a hot air balloon's burners and take a small 15-30 minute flight. Not sure if this is against balloon safety procedures, but meh!

Another idea I thought would be pretty cool is to have it right behind a jet when it takes off! Laughing

Maybe a nice military grade flamethrower...or give it to the NYC Fire Department and let them have some fun putting it in fires and things Grin

Ok, doesn't have to be NYC FD...they're just pretty well known right.

What about an industrial magnet?
Would the data on the disk be intact after a few minutes under a magnet like the image below?

As seen on the show Jackass.

I think they're focused on surviving fire or water... Your house might burn down or flood, but I don't know what to tell you if someone comes over to destroy it with junkyard equipment.

That makes the contest much more limited in creativity...but ok.

How about testing the ioSafe Solo in a Carnival Porta John for a few days?

Napalm...

Lava Smile People living on a Volcano might appreciate that one!

Or maybe stuff that you would find in a garage or mechanics shop that would be flammable...Acetone for example...

I would say if there is going to be funding behind the testing to have fun with it:

Fire Test:
Flamethrower - Would be pretty cool to see someone dressed up like the Pyro in Team Fortress 2 and equipped with and actual flame thrower, rain havoc on the enclosure

Water Test:
Strap this bad boy to the anchor of a large sea vessel and hit the max dept/time under water and see how it looks when all is said and done.
