A video card upgrade would give your current system a nice boost in performance. The GTX260 you listed above or one of the alternatives mentioned would be sufficient to give you a very large boost in gaming performance. Might be enough to keep you from upgrading for another 6 months anyway. You could buy the planned card now and hold off on everything else, put the card in your current system and if it doesn't work for you, upgrade the rest.
You're not going to see a big increase in gaming performance going from a 3.0Ghz dual core to a 3.0Ghz quad core. There are some games that can use the quad, but not very many. In the future they will all take advantage of it though. New builds should absolutely take advantage of the future uprade potential of the Core i7 and AMD X4's.

Having contemplated on a processor upgrade just recently, this was the main issue that I tackled with. A LGA 775 Core 2 system may seem like a good deal now, but with LGA 1366 Core i7 and LGA 1156 Core i5's coming soon, you are pretty much left with a dead end in terms of upgrade potential.
I ultimately settled for a AM3 system and a Phenom ii X4 955. Performance is similar to the upper end Core 2 Quad's and it seems like the AM3 socket will have some staying power if what AMD is doing with AM2 now is any indication. Love the backward compatibility they have going on there, since I got stuck with a Socket 939 at the end of it's lifecycle. |

Core i5 is here now (or at least you can order for shipment this week), and while I have no experience with it, it could be an option...

Future proofing and 65W TDP quad cores are a couple of the best reasons to go with the AMD quad core offerings. Price is another one. They lag a bit behind their intel counterparts, but are still plenty fast for gaming. Intel does now have 65W TDP Quads, but they charge quite a large premium for them.
