You're not going to see a big increase in gaming performance going from a 3.0Ghz dual core to a 3.0Ghz quad core. There are some games that can use the quad, but not very many. In the future they will all take advantage of it though. New builds should absolutely take advantage of the future uprade potential of the Core i7 and AMD X4's.

Having contemplated on a processor upgrade just recently, this was the main issue that I tackled with. A LGA 775 Core 2 system may seem like a good deal now, but with LGA 1366 Core i7 and LGA 1156 Core i5's coming soon, you are pretty much left with a dead end in terms of upgrade potential.

I ultimately settled for a AM3 system and a Phenom ii X4 955. Performance is similar to the upper end Core 2 Quad's and it seems like the AM3 socket will have some staying power if what AMD is doing with AM2 now is any indication. Love the backward compatibility they have going on there, since I got stuck with a Socket 939 at the end of it's lifecycle.
