I have this in my computer, the memory is in slots 2 & 3, they are a pair. Should they be in 1 & 2?

1. ABIT NForce2 Chipset Motherboard For AMD Socket A CPU, Mdl. #“NF7-S” V2

2. AMD Mobile Athlon XP 2600+, 266 MHz FSB, 512K L2 Cache Processor

3. Kingston HyperX (1gig X2 gig) 184pin DDR SDRAM 400 (PC3200) in slots 2 and 3.

For dual channel memory configuration, the memory should be set in a specific order, depending on the motherboard. The memory slots for most mobos are color coded and you can look up the slot combinations. If I remember correctly, my old Nforce2 mobo was able to do dual channel in slot combinations: 1&2, 3&4, 1&3, 2&4. I would imagine it would be the same for most other motherboards as well

This one only has three slots... Right? All black, too...

I saw this online:

Quote:
When installing two PC3200 modules, install them in DIMM3 and DIMM2.

You won't find this in the hard copy of the User Manual and it is rather backwards from conventional logic. It does make a difference.

Looked at the motherboard and it is indeed three memory slots and all black. I saw that either 2&3 or 1&3 configurations works. Guess it makes a little bit of sense since the third slot looks like it's separated from the other two a little bit.

Am I the only one who finds it odd to have a dual channel board have three slots? 2 or 4, sure, cause you can pair them up, but I don't think I've ever seen one with three.
