Did you know that the technology exists to safely take off, fly and land large passenger airplanes? But for some reason, people feel 'safer' with a human pilot that can die or get smashing drunk at any time...
Personally I'd like it if they started using computers for the whole thing, and pilots to check on them for a few years till the bugs are all worked out.
And then do the same thing for cars. Sure Americans would never let computers drive their cars, but I think it would be a good idea to force bad drivers to use autopilots whenever they're caught. |

It would be my luck that the plane gets the Blue Screen of Death! Then I get to fall to my death as the plane reboots! _________________ "I'm a mog: half man, half dog. I'm my own best friend!" |

I saw the news story as well...and like the retired pilot said, it was essentially a non event. Computer systems should be there to help..not take over IMO. Skynet anyone? lol _________________

"Not letting the passengers know" to me is a good thing as everything was "under control". Once fired up "panic" can be very hard to control.
Just another example of when it is one's time....click. Also a plus for "redundancy".
Also being well into "oldfartendom" the human factor still appeals over total automation. _________________ As of 02/01/11

lol, I'm halfway there and I agree wholeheartedly. I guess I fear a computer bug or malfunction than human error in one of these situations. |

Definitely a non-event, I haven't read anything on it, but I'm betting both "co-pilots" have several thousand hours in that particular plane and have probably made hundreds of landings.
I know on ships, It's a point of pride that my guys can all do my job. Guessing the same applies to airliners. _________________
