my buddy gave me an old p3 sony laptop that wont power on... i want to use it in my car for diagnostics and such

the issue is that it wont turn on as the title states. i tested the power supply and its running the proper voltage but it is a universal one

when i plug it in to the laptop no lights come on or anything. it also has a dock and when i plug in the dock same thing. so, either both the dock and the laptop are bad something is f-ed on the power supply or could the battery be bad? i have a really old skool one that has a bad battery but it still lights up when i plug it in...

any thoughts?

its a sony vaio pcg r505jl

Even with a non-working battery, if the power brick is getting the right polarity and voltage to it, it should work.
Since you don't get any lights or any sort of startup/spinup action, i'm guessing it's a NO power, or something is really fried inside.
I'd open it up a look (starting at the power inlet jack) for fuses/CB's or burnt/broken ( or missing)components
with a multimeter you should be able to figure out how far the power is getting.
Another possiblity is the power on switch is broken, or the power down when close switch is stuck/thinking it's closed

its just weird to me though that neither the dock plugged in seperatly or the computer light up at all so its like both parts are bad... ill open it up right now though Smile i like doing that stuff lol

you don't have the dead battery in it do you?

I remember some older Dells that wouldn't boot if the battery was bad.

just pull the battery, if it turns on that was it. If not, probably the motherboard

do Sony's have any diag lights? I know if there's a bad component, Dells used to flash a series of lights so you could figure out which part was bad.

It's been forever and a day since I touched a Sony lappy
