Hard Drive Questions

Okay I have an old IDE 60G hard drive sitting around that I had in my old computer... problem is I would like to retrieve some documents and stuff off of it. Is this possible since it was set up as a OS installed HD? I tried hooking it up to the IDE port but when I turned on the computer the S wouldn't load from my current HD (I had the old one set to slave)

The way I connected the old HD was through the IDE connector that was also attached to my DVD drive... is that correct? My MB(GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 ) only had one IDE/PATA connector slot and I used both connections on the IDE ribbon.

Any suggestions on what I could try?

Sorry if this sounds real confusing... I'm still trying to get a clue on what I'm actually doing.

You should be able to connect it as you mentioned and then when the system powers up there is an option to choose your boot device. Can't remember what key it is right off hand(esc, F11 or F12 I think), but it's listed right along with the option to enter the Bios. Anyway re-connect the HDD, boot the comp. Press the key on boot up that allows you to select your boot device and then see if you can find your new hdd to boot from.

Or, maybe just get a USB enclosure and then not only get what you want off of it, but then convert it into a permanent backup device.

yeah I've tried several different things. The HD just must be bad. I connected it as my master HD and disconnected my SATA HD and when it would boot up it would go to the windows safe mode menu...but it wouldn't allow me to select anything using my keyboard and would try to start windows normally. Once it counts down it attempts to start but I get a quick flash of a "blue screen of death" and the computer restarts. Hmmm.... I also tried connecting it as slave to my SATA HD...but once it came to the windows load screen it would just go black and nothing would happen.

Oh well... it seems like there isn't much as I can do besides paying someone hundreds of dollars to scrub the drive.

Chances are the drive is fine. If it's from a different motherboard, your windows installation probably doesn't recognize your new hardware properly. That's why it's causing a crash when it tries to load windows off of it. You should be able to keep it as a secondary drive though, so I'm not sure what the trouble is there.

The simplest thing to do is follow BB's advice and put the drive into a USB hard drive enclosure.
