What is the difference between ATA 100 and ATA 133 besides the speed; can either or fit in any ATA machine?
thanks

Most, if not all P-ATA drives will work on all ATA motherboards.

If you put a ATA133 harddrive on a mobo with ATA33, 66, or 100 - it will only operate at the max speed of the mobo. Vice-versa applies to ATA133 mobo and a ATA33 or even an old PIO mode drive.

The arrangement will work at the speed of the slowest device.

Also, ATA66 and faster drives/mobos need the 80 conductor ribbons. ATA33 and all PIO mode drives only need the 40 conductor ribbons.

Capacity issues can occur with really old motherboards, I'm talking 6 or more years old, when used in conjunction with today's super capacity drives. ..but you're probably safe.

ATA-133 Is Maxtor only (might be in Seagate now that they bought Maxtor), and is mostly smoke and mirrors.

But as Knight says, ATA will run at the Highest speed of the slowest piece of hardware.

There are other ATA-133 brands... Hitachi and Samsung, too... Pretty much the big names minus Seagate and Western Digital.

Huh.... you're right. Last time I checked it was just Maxtor.... Shows you how I'm keeping up on ATA.
