i have a bit of an older system i wanna get running the issue is that within 5 minutes of turning it on the cpu temp is at 200 degrees F ....not kidding lol.... thats not running anything either just sitting in bios... im thinking its either the cpu or the heatsync... its a tiny one thats on there like a 60mm or something like that... i changed the fan on it but it didnt matter... its an xp2000+ cpu on a gigabyte board...

the cpu fan is obviously the cheap thing to replace... any suggestions?

I've gotta believe that's a false reading from one of your temp sensors. Are any of the other temps sensors showing really high readings, or just that one?

Is the system crashing when you put some load on it?

Sounds like a bad reading to me, too... Do you have a thermal probe you can verify with?

or you finger? if the cpu is 200F then the heatsink should be pretty hot to touch.

If thats a Palomino or Thoroughbred A core, it is very possible that it's a cooker.

Taking the overclocker's approach on cooling is the most logical step.

1. better heatsink and fan
2. better thermo paste, and make sure it's properly applied.
3. better case ventilation.

Try reapplying the thermal paste on it, maybe you borked the job on it the first time. Are you overclocking it on accident maybe? What speed is it running at?
