SATA HD as boot up?

What everyone here has said. One other thing to add into this, is to create a new OS CD with XP SP2 and all of the hotfixes slitstreamed into the installables.

I have heard of people having success installing on SATA drives after creating an up to date OS CD...

I was able to install Xp on my SATA drive pretty simply on an ASUS 8n-SLI. At first the system would not pick it up but I had to make sure the bios was set to boot from the SATA drive. Hopefully vista supports larger harddrives as I had to use partition magic to extend the partition.

I want to thank everyone who submitted useful info. Like i stated earlier I am pretty new on how SATA works. I guess I was just being dumb by thinking it would operate like a regular EID drive. Thought all I had to do was set the jumper to Master and that would be it. I am currently doing a lil more research like reading the MB manual, checking the BIOS settings, updating and copying drivers (floppy). Hopefully with all the info I received on this thread I will get it right. Again I want to thank everyone for taking the time to help out a complete stranger in his time of need.

Woot! It's not a boot drive but thats even better cause the IDE drive i'm using to run my comp is currently from my old comp and has alot of stuff I dont want to bother transfering over. Which brings me to my next question. My SATA drive is a WD 74Gb
Raptor (10K RPM's), I would like to know if it would be a good HD for gaming purposes only? Like if I decided to install Online games like EQ, W.o.W., D&D online..just to mention a few. Will installing games on the Sata drive make more of a difference than if I installed them on an IDE drive at 7200 rpm or does it not matter?

So were you able to get the SATA drive to boot up as your initial drive? If so, how or what did you do to get it to boot up. I too have a SATA drive installed on my ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe board and have just given up on making it my primary drive. Currently, I have a copy (from the Disk 1, Partition 1) on the SATA drive which is the 3rd disk on my motherboard. Can you give me the details as to how you got your SATA drive it boot up? Was it a BIOS change... I've tried searching through the BIOS and I can't get it to recognize the SATA as an initial drive on boot-up. SO what was it you did to get it to work. Include details, please.
