Does anybody know when the Conroe cores from intel will be hitting the market? I was looking at upgrading to a P-D 955, but for the price tag, I'd rather wait for a Conroe. I'm hoping to get a better chip before college come this fall. Any ideas when they'll be out and have a selection of mobos with the required chipsets? (I don't believe current ones will support it).

Don't know the answer to your question, but don't call them Conroe any more...

Quote:
Intel Sunday christened its new chips for laptop and desktop computers "Core 2 Duo," hoping to reignite interest in its products amid tough competition from rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

Formerly known as Conroe and Merom, the microchips boast two processing cores, meaning they are better at handling several tasks at once, such as crunching a spreadsheet while playing video.

You'll need to ensure the MB you get is VRM 11 compliant. Have a Google on the subject.

Thanks guys, and already counting down the days....Although I'll probobly wait a few months for any bugs to get worked out and motherboard manufacturers to get their stuff together.

Looks like I'll finally be leaving AMD this summer as well. Kinda hard to resist with the kind of prices these conroe chips are set to sell at on the release date.

Where did you see the release prices? When I buy one of these, I think I'm going to go all out and get the Core 2 Extreme at the highest clockrate. I'm sure itll be around of the current Pentium D 955s. Not too much higher, I hope.

Also, out of curiosity, do you think the motherboard manufacturers will be on top of the Conroe stuff pretty fast (already in production now?) or should I wait? For the most part, my loyalty when it comes to mobos, lies with ASUS so I hope they'll get some good stuff out fast.

I hope to see all the mainstream mobo's supporting the conroe chip right by the release date, but my guess is we'll see intel only for a little while.

My newbie question for the day, will I be able to find a mobo that will handle a new conroe chip along with my old DDR400 and AGP graphics card?

Thanks for the link.

But a new mobo supporting conroe and DDR is unlikely. There may be some that support AGP, but will probobly be few and far between.

AMD will also be releasing their AMD Turion 64 X2 any day, as well as a 64-bit Semprons.
